Built for ground works
Rubber chips are heavy, durable and let water through, which suits outdoor and civil uses.
- Landscaping
- Civil engineering fill
- Erosion control
- Feedstock for granules and crumb

The first step in tyre recycling
Every grade of recycled tyre rubber starts as chips. Tyres are cut, the heavy bead wire is pulled out, and shredders tear the rubber into coarse pieces. From here, chips can be sold as they are, or ground further into rubber granules and crumb rubber.
Steel recovered during shredding and grinding is sold to steel mills for melting, so very little of a tyre goes to waste.
Chips, granules or crumb?
The three grades come from the same tyres. The difference is how far the rubber travels through the process, and that decides where each grade works best.
| Grade | How it is made | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber chips | Coarse pieces straight off the shredders | Landscaping, civil fill, erosion control, feedstock for finer grades |
| Rubber granules | Chips ground down, cleaned of steel and fibre, screened to size | Running tracks, playgrounds, turf infill, gym floors, mats and tiles |
| Crumb rubber | Granules milled fine and screened by mesh, up to 30 mesh | Rubber-modified bitumen, moulded goods, reclaim and compounding |
| Steel shreds | Bead and belt wire pulled out by magnets during processing | Steel melting and the scrap trade |

Common questions
Short answers to what buyers ask us most.
What are rubber chips?
Coarse, clean-cut pieces of tyre rubber, straight off our shredders. They are the first and largest grade in tyre recycling.
What are rubber chips used for?
Landscaping, civil engineering fill and erosion control, where their weight, toughness and free drainage are useful. They are also the feedstock for making granules and crumb.
What size are the chips?
Chip size depends on the shredder settings. Tell us your application and we will advise the grade that fits.
